My Quilts ~ Flannel Plaid and Ticking Quilt

The mini makeover in our basement guest bedroom is continuing. I made a whole cloth quilt with a large plaid flannel sheet and backed with a blue and white ticking stripe.



The natural cotton batting is a really nice weight, neither too heavy nor too light and not too lofty.






I've really been working on decluttering and I like the results so far. The night tables have already been changed to a cute pair I picked up at a yard sale last year and painted white. I'll update the photos once I hang the skis (from here).





Changing to white pillows and sheets is something else I plan to do. Currently the sheets are navy and the bedskirt is denim. I love the mixture in my favourite inspiration photo below -frilly white cotton, ticking stripe and blue denim. 





I also really like the landscapes in the photo below, from Country Living. I have collected three so far, but I'm not sure if the room will look too cluttered with a collection of landscapes and a photo gallery.





Lots still to do but it feels fresher already.

Ralph Lauren Inspired Guest Bedroom

Denim, wood, white and natural linens, faded florals, plaid flannel, quilts, leather, vintage suitcases, ticking stripes, blue paisley.....


these are all things that I love and the inspiration for a little almost-no-cost makeover in progress in our basement guest bedroom.

I love these images (above and below) from Ralph Lauren Home and I'm using them as inspiration for our guest room. I have pulled together some items in the room we are already using, and added some other items from 'shopping the house'. We love blue, and will be keeping the blue walls for now (my sister will kill me laugh uncontrollably if I mention painting this room again, especially with the kitchen unfinished.)


I love the texture in these inspiration photos and still need to search for some items to add this feel ('cause I don't have any great old leather chairs looking for a new spot.) The mix of patterns on the bed is really interesting and I think I can pull off a bit of the look with what we have (blue plaid, blue and white ticking, denim, a faded floral, white and some beige twill.)

The bedroom is also home to an exercise area and a drum set, and it used to have three twin beds. It is not a huge room, but long and narrow. We added a double bed with headboard and kept one of the twins with a spare hidden mattress for guests with kids. While I love the ornate bed in the inspiration photos, this is the headboard I am working with for now. Yeah, not high on character factor, but I like wood.

A special rocking chair will add some more wood to the room and I hope to find the perfect dresser or night table. I also like the look of stacked quilts and have a few that will work and be handy for guests. 



The curtains I will be using are already made (formerly from our family room) from this paisley fabric.

I already have denim bedskirts and twill shams. This twin quilt that I made from old jeans will also fit in well.

This photo inspired me to collect a few inexpensive paintings and I even found a vintage blue suitcase.

We love these rodeo prints, but I was having trouble making them work in the living room. Hopefully they will fit in with some other cowboy/farm elements in the guest suite.

I hope to share photos as our almost-no-cost guest bedroom makeover progresses. I would love to have it mostly finished before I start decorating for Christmas. Thanks for stopping by!

Our summer porch entry

Welcome to our home!

I love our little front porch! It provides a sheltered spot for our family and guests to enter our home, a great spot to sit and a fun space to decorate seasonally. This is the main entry to our home. We do not have access from the garage and only patio doors in our backyard so it gets tons of use by our rambunctious boys and our guests. But it is such a great little spot that it deserves the attention. I know I am late in joining but I would like to link this to Nester's Price My Space Party. (It took me this long to figure out how to use Photobucket to add the numbers and blogger wasn't letting me load pics and then move them. I had to delete them all and reload them in reverse order. Very frustrating!)

We have a builder home in a great neighbourhood but large porches are not at all common. Most homes have an even smaller porch or unsheltered steps out front because most homes here, ranging from 1500 sqft to 4200 sqft have the garages out front. The porch is one of the reasons we chose our model. ~~Now let's Price My Space~~

The chairs and plants were about the only things I bought this year, the rest are things I had previously bought or had given to me and re-used on the porch.

A six pack of white Geraniums. I'm on the lookout for a better side table to hold a cup of tea and a magazine. That little wicker piece will probably move to a new spot.

Cottage Style Today

I love the pretty simplicity of cottage style. The simplicity of white and slipcovered furnishings, beadboard walls or ceilings and the pretty little accent pieces.

The blue in this cottage room (from BHG's "Cottage Style Today" feature) is very similar to the blue we used in our basement guest bedroom. We have added a few more rustic touches in keeping with our love of farms and western elements, but I think the feel is similar. Well, it will be when we replace the grey wall to wall carpeting!
I have enjoyed some recent posts from a few of my favourite blogs about pampering your guests with personalized trays of hygiene items they may have forgotten. We are fortunate to have a whole guest suite in our basement (that we originally made as a suite for my parents.) It is still a work in progress as we take out the kitchen and update the flooring, but for now we have the luxury of a large bedroom, full bathroom, tv room and exercise area for us to spread out or for guests to enjoy. It is a real luxury having a bathroom with all the little necessities our guests may need during their stay.

It does have a great shower, but unfortunately not this awesome tub or light from the window! I so love the beautiful beadboard.
Our sitting/t.v. area in the guest suite is not as roomy or bright as this great space. But I do have some of the feel with signs, unique pieces and and homemade touches like quilts and pillows. When we get around to replacing the flooring I will be sure to post pics of our basement guest space. For now, we and our guests will continue to enjoy it, with a few tweaks here and there of course!
